Coffee Education Workshops

Join us for any one or all three of our series of coffee education workshops. ‘Coffee and Canapés’ (May 28th); ‘Roasting and Cupping’ (June 25th) and ‘How to Hack Your Home Brew’ (July 30th). These sessions will last no more than 90 minutes. It will be a great way to mingle with the Old Barracks coffee community we have built over the past year and hopefully share some coffee knowledge and insights. These events are free but you must register in advance.

Coffee Workshop‘COFFEE AND CANAPÉS’

When?  Tuesday May 28th
What time? 7-8.30pm

Where? The Old Barracks Coffee Roastery

Every time we serve a coffee we also present a little info card, detailing the kind of flavours you will find in the cup. Of course these flavours change depending on how you drink your coffee; filter, espresso, latte, cold brew etc. To help you understand these flavours more we are presenting to you three different coffees each accompanied by a sensory smorgasbord to represent each of the three brews, their flavours and their aromas. Think dates, salted caramel bites, bitter chocolate squares, fresh raspberries, biscuits, dried peach, elderflower lemonades and a host of other mouthwatering bites that will elevate the flavours in the cup you are drinking.

We will talk about each brew, why the flavours present differently and what terms like body, mouthfeel and intensity really mean. Or how the way the coffee has been processed at the farm affects the intensity of flavour.

The session – is free and exclusive to our #oldbarracksfam community, all you have to do is register.

‘ROASTING & CUPPING’

When?  June 25th
What time? 7-8.30pm

Where? The Old Barracks Coffee Roastery

We’ll have the roaster fired up and we’re going to show you how we roast a coffee from start to finish, then we’ll do it all over again with a simple variation. Once the coffees are roasted we are going to transfer them to the ‘cupping table’ and see if we can taste any difference between the two roasts and compare them also to other coffees served on the bar. This basic way of tasting coffee is how as roasters we identify ‘better’ roasts or flavour variations from roast to roast or crop to crop. Heading into our second year roasting means we are getting new crops (this years harvests) on some coffees we also bought last year and we can compare how these new crop flavours present. As a coffee buyer its very exciting, especially when some farms are always trying new processes and ways to improve their coffees.

When?  July 30th
What time? 7-8.30pm

Where? The Old Barracks Coffee Roastery

After 2 deeply informative sessions in May and June you really are on the path of understanding how to better your home brew. In this session we will demonstrate how to refine the flavours you are creating with those brews at home, to make them stronger or lighter, to develop more body or higher acidity and how to decide which is the best home brew kit for you. We will brew everything from espresso and aeropress to kalita and chemex and you can pick from any of the coffees on the bar to taste.
